CAJLE holds an annual conference which includes lectures and workshops by guest speakers, as well as, research presentations and a general meeting. The conference provides an invaluable opportunity for participants to exchange information and opinions on Japanese language education, Japanese linguistics, and related topics. In order to enhance our collaboration with members in various regions across Canada, we have held the conferences in the following locations: Victoria, Fredericton, Vancouver, Regina, Banff, Toronto, Montreal, and Niagara Falls. The CAJLE 2017 Annual Conference will take place in Calgary, Alberta.
Whether it is in Japan or abroad, we all simultaneously belong to various communities such as society and our home, in addition to the classroom. We live in these communities daily, and thus mutually affect one another. This is also the case for languages and learning. Languages are not single entities, but multiple and multifaceted; for instance, native speakers’ and learner’s languages, and the standard and non-standard language varieties. Moreover, diversification in the purpose and form of learning is being gradually recognized.
However, when it comes to Japanese language learning and language use, it is still common that the goal of learning is set to the performance like native speakers and that language use modelled on native speakers is required. The language that individuals use is also often seen and assessed from a monolingual perspective in terms of language ability and accuracy. This conference aims at confronting the diversification in the field of Japanese language education as well as examining together how we can embrace such diversification inside the classroom and how we can extend the understanding of the diversification beyond the walls of the classroom.
In Calgary, a city nestled between the Great Plains to the east and the Rockies to the west, we look forward to sharing a fruitful time with all of the participants while enjoying a fresh air of the plateau.
Paper Presentations – there will be oral presentation sessions (three concurrent sessions) and a poster presentation session (90-minute session). For information regarding the application procedure, please see the Call for Proposals.
The detailed information such as conference program, registration and accommodation will become available at a later date.
